WHERE REALITY MEETS THE PAINT BRUSH
WHAT HAS INFLUENCED ME?
It has been twelve years since I began the journey of art making full time but the act of noticing how light touches the water, clouds or the petals of a flower has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember.
I grew up in Saskatchewan and had the good fortune to be surrounded by artists as well as people who valued creativity in all its forms.
My formal art training began in high school and continued in post-secondary where I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts.
My career and my focus on family took me away from painting but the drive for creative expression was still present. My work as a counsellor afforded me the opportunity to find the potential in each person I worked with and to help them arrive at possible solutions to their challenges.
Another creative outlet, during that time, was creating costumes for a multitude of theatrical productions incorporating historical research with construction of garments to create a time, place and mood for the audience.
WHAT IS MY ART ABOUT?
I strive to use themes form the natural world to create paintings that give the viewer a new experience. My greatest joy is having someone express a real connection with the work.
I have aspirations of a technical nature, to make paintings that are pleasing in terms of colour combinations and that are strong compositionally, but the greatest satisfaction comes from conveying a feeling that resonates with someone else.
When I set out to create a series, the things that inspire my decision about a particular place or thing is something that goes deeper than the moment in time. It is the energy and the collective experiences from the past that capture my imagination.
I am surrounded by nature, where I live. It allows one to contemplate the evolution that has occurred for thousands of years and attempt to interpret the significance of that in the art.
THE PROCESS
I work on several pieces at once to allow for experimentation in the work and to prevent myself from becoming too precious. The process involves many layers and is very much a journey. This requires many steps forward and backwards until there is a sense of peace.
There are many components that are considered regarding the balance of colour, texture, value and composition to arrive at the final stage of each painting in the series.
My goal is to create abstracted interpretations of the things that inspire me. I want those who look at my paintings and who love them to be able to have their own interpretations and to be drawn in.
The process of creating art is a journey and it is my belief that it is only done, when I am done.
